History
Established in 1695, the "city" of Arlington has a varied history that is exemplified in its many monuments and historical attractions. The county became part of the District of Columbia in 1791, but was rechartered as a part of Virginia in 1846. Arlington was a major point of slave trade and thus was part of the Confederacy until the end of the American Civil War, and was occupied by military forces up until the end of that war. Since the end of the Civil War, Arlington's economy has boomed, mostly due to the influx of government building and employees, making it one of the most important counties in the state.
